No less than 64 people were killed in a police operation targeting the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's northern suburbs - the most extensive and fatal action in the Brazilian state's history.

Four police officers lost their lives during Operation Containment in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, government representatives stated. Over 80 suspects were arrested.

Intense confrontations broke out when approximately 2,500 police forces entered the area on the morning of the operation. The Comando Vermelho reacted using gunfire, igniting obstacles and using drone-dropped explosives, officials confirmed.

The International human rights organization said it was "horrified" by the law enforcement raid, urging "swift and comprehensive examinations".

Mission Consequences

The area of favelas close to the city's international airport is regarded as the central command of among the nation's strongest organised crime groups.

State officials confirmed a minimum of 50 of the fatalities were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".

Many residents were wounded, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.

Community Response

Locals have likened the elevated neighborhood - housing around 300,000 individuals - to a "war zone" since the raid started.

Access ways continue shut across the area.

Criminal Expansion

The criminal network has been increasing their territory across the Rio state, expanding narcotics distribution networks and control of the hillside favelas.

Rio's police stated over 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were confiscated in the operation, together with numerous weapons.

Raid Preparation

The coordinated mission by various security forces was preceded by a extended probe.

Many of the individuals are considered members of a faction from the Brazilian state who are at the moment taking refuge in the metropolitan area.

Wider Perspective

Extensive security missions are frequent in the South American nation ahead of important worldwide conferences in the nation.

The United Nations climate conference COP30 is taking place in the northern urban center in the eleventh month.
