Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He Claims They Should Face Death Penalty
Democratic officials demonstrated anger after the ex-president charged a coalition of Democratic congress members of being "traitors" and asserted they should be taken into custody and sentenced "through capital punishment" following their posting of a disputed video.
The Content That Triggered the Controversy
The clip, shared on earlier this week, features six Democratic lawmakers who in the past served in armed forces or intelligence capacities.
"As we did, you all swore an oath to safeguard and defend this national charter," the officials declared in the brief video. "Currently, the threats to our democratic foundation don't only come from foreign nations, but from domestically. Our laws are explicit, you can decline illegal orders, you can refuse improper directives, you must reject improper directives. No one has to carry out directives that contravene the legal system or our national charter."
Trump's Furious Reply
The recorded statement seemed to provoke a furious reply from the former president.
On later in the week, Trump published on his preferred platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate post, he stated: "This represents really concerning, and Dangerous to our United States. Their statements cannot be permitted to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third message, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also shared a declaration that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Officials Answer
Following Trump's comments on that day, Democratic leadership published a joint declaration denouncing the comments.
"Political violence has no position in America," they stated. "Representatives who appeared in the video all served our United States with exceptional national pride and distinction. We clearly denounce Donald Trump's disgusting and dangerous threats of violence against elected officials, and call on GOP representatives to forcefully do the same."
The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in communication with protective services "to ensure the protection of these members and their families."
"Donald Trump must right away take down these extreme online messages and withdraw his violent language before he causes harm," the statement added.
Lawmakers' Firm Answer
The representatives who were featured in the video also released a statement.
"We serve as ex-military personnel and defense specialists who value this nation and took an pledge to defend and support the founding document of the United States," they said. "This commitment continues forever, and we plan to keep it. No threat, coercion, or incitement will deter us from that sacred responsibility."
"The significant point is that the former president deems it liable to punishment by capital punishment for us to repeat the law," they stated. "Armed forces members should recognize that we have their support as they carry out their oath to the founding principles and responsibility to adhere to only lawful orders. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They continued: "All citizens must unite and censure the president's demands for our murder and political violence. This is a period for principled stance."
More Political Comments
The Democratic Senate minority leader also condemned Trump's statements and shared on digital platforms: "Let's be crystal clear: the President of the United States is calling for the capital punishment of government members."
He added: "This constitutes an direct THREAT. Each congressional member, all representatives, every American – regardless of party – should denounce this right away and unconditionally."
The Conservative official defended Trump's allegation that the Democrats had been involved in "rebellion", labeling the video as "wildly inappropriate", commenting: "This constitutes very harmful, you have prominent officials of the government advising military personnel to ignore directives, I think that represents without precedent in US history."
The Conservative representative also allegedly stated to journalists that in what he reviewed of Trump's messages, Trump was "defining the crime of rebellion" but that "attorneys have to analyze the language and establish all that."
Administration Response
During a White House press conference on Thursday afternoon, when inquired by a journalist, "Would the president want to execute congressional representatives?", the White House press secretary replied: "No."
"We should understand about what the ex-commander in chief is reacting to," the spokesperson declared. "We see sitting members of the American legislature who conspired to orchestrate a video message to members of the American armed forces, to active duty service members advising them to ignore the commander in chief's proper directives."
She said: "The sanctity of our defense system rests on the command structure, and if that system is violated, it can result in casualties, it can result in confusion, and that is exactly what these members of Congress ... are essentially promoting."
