Giants QB Wilson Responds at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Quarterback Remarks

NY Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson did not hold back on online platforms this week, reacting to latest criticism from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.

"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson declared on X. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."

The quarterback's remarks directly referenced the notorious Bounty Gate controversy from 2009 to 2011, when Payton was coaching the Saints.

At that time, the NFL determined that the Saints had rewarded team members for making aggressive tackles on rival teams. As a result, Payton was suspended from the league for a full year.

What Sparked the Recent Dispute

The quarterback's response came after Payton made remarks after the Broncos' remarkable 33-32 win over the New York. Payton suggested that the Giants had "discovered new energy" with Jaxson Dart, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.

Moreover, Payton hinted that he had told Giants owner John Mara that he would prefer facing Wilson over Dart.

"I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that the switch would've happened well after our game,'" Payton commented.

Context of the Wilson-Payton Relationship

  • The quarterback was traded to the Denver from the Seahawks in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245M extension.
  • The Broncos finished 4-11 in his debut year prior to the team brought in Payton, who was coming back to the sidelines after a period in TV commentary.
  • The coach replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 season, a move that ensured the player from getting injured.

If Wilson stayed on the roster by spring 2024, his $37 million salary for the following year would have been guaranteed. In the end, Wilson was let go, marking the ugly split between the player and his mentor.
