Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His family, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.
“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, from our conversation, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”
New York police shared surveillance images earlier this week of a man sought in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt were reported.
The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday morning about halfway between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The assailant escaped.
Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a child.
“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “My mind went to his family, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd did not participate during the current season, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on 18 August with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.
He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in March and was expected to be an important component of an improved special teams group under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on August 2 and was carted from the field.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while working his way back.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he attends every game. He is completely involved. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of Texas University in 2019. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with the Jets in March.
