Larry Summers Leaves from OpenAI Board
One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is leaving the board at OpenAI, just a week after a series of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.
The economist remarked in a statement that he was "thankful for the opportunity to have contributed, optimistic about the prospects of the organization, and look forward following their advancement".
Summers, who formerly led the prestigious university, announced on recently that he would be stepping back from public commitments due to his connections with Epstein.
Digital Correspondence
The freshly disclosed communications demonstrated that the official corresponded with the financier until the 24 hours preceding the financier's 2019 detention for suspected trafficking of underage individuals.
In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company said it understood his determination to depart.
"We appreciate his many contributions and the perspective he provided to the Board," the organization commented.
Legislative Background
This news comes after the two houses of Congress decided on this week to endorse a legislation that would require the federal prosecutors to release its records on Epstein.
The legislation will subsequently head to the administration of the White House for endorsement. Trump has indicated he expects to endorse the bill, after reversing his view on the subject following pushback from his supporters.
Correspondence Findings
A group of Epstein-connected messages released by the Congressional committee days ago included multiple prominent individuals in the financier's previous network, without suggesting any legal wrongdoing by those figures.
The communications revealed that the professor and Epstein dined together frequently, with he often trying to introduce Summers to prominent international personalities.
Personal Response
After the messages were shared with the wider community, he said he took "full responsibility for my poor judgment to maintain communicating with the financier".
He added that he desired "to rebuild faith and repair connections with the individuals nearest to me".
Professional History
The economist held leadership roles under two Democratic presidents; functioning as economic leader under Bill Clinton, and as director of the economic advisory body under Barack Obama.
He presided over the university from five years and continues to be a professor there. When declaring his departure from public commitments earlier on Monday, he stated he would maintain his teaching commitments.
Additional Consequences
Following the economist's announcement on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a liberal think tank in DC where he was a prominent member, announced that Summers was no longer connected with the organization.
He joined the board of OpenAI, which creates ChatGPT, in the previous year - following a failed attempt to remove its CEO OpenAI's head.
