Manchester United Set to Secure Germany Forward Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
Manchester United are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side
The forward, with six months left on her contract, has been a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League side.
Her exit from Munich was expected after she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the club's supporters after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its leading forwards. According to reports, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen the Forward Line
The experienced striker's signing should represent a major boost to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been highly consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Steam at Old Trafford
Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United appear to be gathering momentum.
Recent performances feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen further business:
- The signing of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
