Russian President Vladimir Putin Pledges Continuous Oil Supplies to India in Rebuff of American Pressure

Amid a clear message to the United States, Leader Vladimir Putin stated to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Russia stands ready to maintain “uninterrupted” supplies of energy resources to India. This declaration came when Putin and Modi met in New Delhi and asserted their bilateral ties were “resistant to outside influence.”

A Signal Aimed at the United States

This affirmation, made on Friday, appeared to be targeted at Washington, which have tried to compel New Delhi into reducing its longstanding links with Moscow. The backdrop follows earlier US actions, including the imposition of import duties on India due to its acquisition of Russian oil.

“Moscow remains a dependable supplier of oil and gas and everything necessary for the advancement of India’s economy,” he remarked. “Russia is prepared to keep guaranteeing the consistent delivery of energy for the booming Indian economy.”

The Indian leader, without mentioning oil specifically, reinforced the focus by stating that “energy security has been a robust and vital foundation of the India-Russia alliance.”

Defying Washington's Stance

Prior to the meeting, during a TV appearance, Putin had questioned Washington's stance over India's energy purchases. Putin stated, “When Washington can claim the privilege to buy our atomic materials, why shouldn’t India have the equivalent access?”

Putin's arrival marked his first visit to India after the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, and Moscow and Delhi made a clear attempt to demonstrate that the bond between the men remained intact.

A Warm Greeting

Taking an rare move, the Indian PM welcomed directly Putin right off the plane. They exchanged a hearty embrace like old friends before holding a private dinner the night before the summit.

The Indian prime minister in his statement called India's relationship with Russia as “a guiding star” and added it was “built on shared respect and profound confidence.”

Expanding Strategic Ties

The meeting produced several important deals across military and trade relations. One significant result was the signing of an strategic roadmap extending until 2030, which targets to double commerce to one hundred billion dollars annually by the 2030 deadline.

Additionally agreed to restructure their military partnership. Even as Russia continues to be India's biggest source of defence equipment, this role has declined lately as India works to widen its supply base.

The joint statement highlighted an agreement on the collaborative manufacturing of sophisticated defence platforms, even if direct reference of purchases such as the Sukhoi Su-57 were left out.

Ultimately, Russia and India reiterated that amid the “ongoing challenging, strained, and uncertain global landscape, their relationship remain resilient to outside forces.”
