The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Reveals He Has a Plan for How The Apple TV+ Show Will Conclude... Currently.
The acclaimed writer-producer did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would become a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “I did not foresee the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
With the first season of the hit series coming to an end—and the next chapter officially in the works—the writers' room reflected on the fan response and whether it will shape the storyline of Pluribus.
About the Incredible Viewer Reception
It would be easy to get swayed by the constant speculation and audience predictions about Pluribus. The creator is striving to steer clear of all that.
“It's like being constantly eating hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's amazing, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's by design. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We don't try to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not impacted by online forums.”
“Better to keep our heads down and working,” he chimes in.
A Pressing Query: Will Vince Gilligan See the Ending of Pluribus?
So if the writers aren't taking cues by fan response, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… with some caveats.
“We've developed some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to throw out a solid concept for a better idea. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Alternatively, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.
“I keep pitching that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Then again, why mess with the legendary finales?
“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
