Why Real Madrid Possess 'Total Trust' in Teenager Pitarch
When an 18-year-old creates club a historic moment in a crucial European match against City, it inevitably draws praise and the spotlight.
During his maiden start in the competition - and fifth game for the club - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time Champions League winners secured a 3-0 last-16 first-leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The young player, who also had his Real debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then helped the Madrid side overcome the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to confirm a last eight berth.
At 18 years old, the midfielder was the team's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's record by 10 days.
Rapid Ascent From The Academy
This talent is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising young players.
He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe youth teams, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a strong impression.
Pitarch worked his way up to the B team and it was during a pre-season game in which they played against the senior squad, then managed by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who took over from the previous coach in January.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "an instant connection," adding he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, personality and determination he added to the side.
'His Greatest Quality Remains His Personality'
During the summer of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the senior squad and gave him playing time during pre-season.
However, it was the change in manager that proved the defining moment in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the clash with Manchester City.
"I've dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the very first time I started playing football, every day you head to training and every day you have a game," said Pitarch following his debut.
"I have just achieved my dream with the best team in the world and in the best competition."
Handed a first start in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he spent four years after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.
Pitarch has seized it with performances that have defied his youth and experience.
"He is a extremely fast footballer, and you can observe his capabilities," remarked Arbeloa. "He's extremely energetic, with excellent stamina, effort and mobility."
The player's mindset has also impressed his manager.
"His standout trait is his personality," added he. "He always wants the ball, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.
"I realize fans might be astonished to see him make his debut in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had complete trust in him to perform what he usually does.
"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the main squad. It is delightful to coach a player like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and was raised deeply involved in Spanish football, moving through youth setups before entering Real Madrid's famous La Fabrica system.
He possesses both Moroccan and Spanish nationality, giving him the option to represent either country at the highest level.
Under Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent different countries at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a official senior international match.
Pitarch has featured for the Spanish national team at youth level, turning out for both the under-19 and U20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain made it to the quarter-finals.
Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are monitoring his rise with interest.
In a recent interview, the player confirmed: "I have not taken my final decision so far. My situation is positive with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a decision in the near future."
His situation echoes that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. While teenage Lamine chose La Roja, Brahim opted to represent the Atlas Lions.
Focus on the Future
At present, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and repaying Arbeloa's faith.
He featured for 74 minutes in the two-one win at the Etihad, which sealed a five-one aggregate success and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.
His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in younger players to aid the team pursue future success.
After his notable contributions to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to be a central figure in that.
"The manager treats me the same. We handle it very normally. I try not to overanalyze it excessively - I must deserve my playing time on the pitch," he said after the win at Manchester.
